What is a solenoid valve?

A solenoid valve is an electromechanically operated valve used to control the flow of liquid or gas in a system. It uses an electromagnetic solenoid coil to open or close the valve mechanically. Solenoid valves are used across various applications, including fluid power systems, industrial automation, HVAC systems, irrigation, and automotive systems.

Components of a solenoid valve

  • Solenoid Coil: A tightly wound wire coil that generates a magnetic field when an electric current passes through it.
  • Plunger or Armature: A movable iron or steel core inside the coil that is drawn into the center when energised.
  • Valve Body: The housing that contains the fluid or gas, with ports for inlet, outlet, and sometimes exhaust.
  • Spring: Used to return the plunger to its original position when the coil is de-energized.

How does a solenoid valve work?

The general purpose of a solenoid is to use electromagnetic induction to produce motion. An electric current passes through a coil, which in turn generates a magnetic field.

This drives a magnetic lever or piston to open or close the valve. ‘Solenoid’ is the name for both the wire coil and the device as a whole.
